Luís Filipe Maria Fernando Pedro de Alcântara António Miguel Rafael Gabriel Gonzaga Xavier Francisco de Assis João Augusto Júlio Volfrando. He was nicknamed Lippipi by his sisters and Loiro, or Blondie, by the aristocracy. Second son of Maria II and Ferdinand II. He began his career in the navy at a young age. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant on 19 May 1851, to lieutenant captain on 29 October 1854 and, during a voyage from Lisbon to Gibraltar, to honorary commander of the brig Pedro Nunes. On 24 March 1858, he was promoted to frigate commander, having taken command of the corvette Bartolomeu Dias on 12 July. On the death of his brother Pedro V, he succeeded him to the throne in 1861. On 6 October 1862, he married Maria Pia de Sabóia (16/10/1847-5/7/1911). Luís, loved hunting and liked to organise woodcock, snipe and big game hunts in the different Tapadas, especially during the winter.
Tomás de Mello Breyner (Memórias) recalls a hunting trip when he was six years old, in which the king was accompanied by the queen and his brother-in-law (Prince Humberto de Sabóia, who had arrived in Lisbon a few days earlier from Madrid, where he had visited Amadeu, his brother and King of Spain).

Maria Pia of Savoy. Daughter of King Victor Manuel II of Piedmont and Archduchess Maria Adelaide of Austria, Queen of Sardinia. She married Dom Luís by proxy at the Royal Palace in Turin on 28 September 1862, arriving in Lisbon on 5 October of the same year, and the marriage was ratified the following day at the Church of S. Domingos. The following children were born of this marriage: Carlos, who succeeded to the throne, and Infante Afonso Henriques.
